Finally, after about six years of being a die-hard fan of MK/SKM/RHP, I'm finally in the same city at the same time as one of Mark's shows. Well, I live in Durham, so within about fifty miles, give or take. Greensboro is a lovely city, filled with old brick buildings and lots of southern-style architecture. I would recommend going to the city based on its own merits. But I was lucky enough to see it for the first time in anticipation of seeing Mark for the first time. I was happy to see about 200 people show up, which was good considering that the Flying Anvil has opened less than two weeks before the show. And overall, the show itself was wonderful. The guitar interplay between Mark and Phil was nothing short of magical at times, and Mark's voice was crystalline, although it's unfortunate that it sounded a bit processed through whatever effects he was using for it. The mix of material was very balanced and cut through most of his career. I didn't write down a set list, but I definitely heard songs from all over the place: Make Like Paper, Michigan (the opener), Mistress, All Mixed Up, Grace Cathedral Park, Tiny Cities, Carry Me Ohio, etc., although nothing from "Ocean Beach" as far as I can remember. The rumors I've always heard circulating about Mark being kind of a dick at shows were for the most part confirmed. He was genuinely funny at times, but I think that his practice is to say something mean and then try to laugh it off, but it rings sort of hollow. I sensed a lot of bitterness about his career, about fans yelling out requests, about fans text messaging during his set, etc. But the music was just golden: there would be a steady pulse of fingerpicked notes within a chord and then all of a sudden a harmonized melodic line would emerge between the two guitars that would cut through the rhythmic accompaniment, especially on songs like Duk Koo Kim, and this is a wonderful device that I've never heard anyone else do better. The one problem I had with the show is that EVERY song was in the same 4/4 fingerpicked format. I've heard live mp3's of Mark's shows where he would vigorously strum his way through Grace Cathedral Park or Michigan, and create all kinds of really cool crescendo effects. But this time, it was the same mournful stream of notes through each song, and after two hours the magic began to wear off. But complaints aside, a wonderful show. I don't imagine he'll come back to North Carolina anytime soon, and so I'm grateful for the experience.
