Setlist:

Alesund
Moorestown
Half Moon Bay
Third and Seneca
You Are My Sun
Australian Winter
Heron Blue
Carry Me Ohio
Natural Light
Katy Song
Duk Koo Kim

E:
Leaning Tree
Blue Orchids

Great show! Watching Mark play on the classical guitar made me wonder why he stuck to so many of the same fingerpicking patterns in previous live shows. He's clearly quite adept, and I don't think he recently learned how to play like that.

After a sublime version of Alesund to open the show, Mark was wiping his hands off and said, "Sorry, I'm a little nervous. These songs are really hard to play!" which got a good laugh from the audience.

Setlist was definitely focused on AFP, but the treatment of some of the older songs on the classical guitar was neat, especially Moorestown which sounded great. He added a little classical "flourish" to it similar to the main theme of Alesund. He couldn't remember the first line of Moorestown, though, and had to stop, apologize, and ask for audience assistance. He had lots of tuning notes and lyric sheets next to him, looks like his catalog is starting to get a little complicated for him to remember by memory.

Before the show, I saw Mark having a cigarette in the back. I said, "Love ya Mark, looking forward to the show" half-expecting him to give me some sort of wisecrack in return about not having a girlfriend (I'm married, btw). Instead, he gave a very sincere "Thank you, thank you very much." I somewhat nostalgically wondered if perhaps his girlfriend wisecracks were a thing of the past. I was not disappointed, however, when a few songs into the show, he said "What's going on everyone?" and some douche said "You said that the last time you were here!" to which Mark just laid in about how guys like him usually don't have girlfriends and are often carrying backpacks. I was waiting for someone to say that he also said the girlfriend wisecrack on his last visit too. Later in the show, someone said, "Tell us about your guitar" and he replied, "It's a 6-string." Then a few moments later he said that the guy who asked that probably doesn't have a girlfriend either.

One person requested "Michigan" and Mark replied, "Mmmm, I might play that." Didn't happen. Another person said, "My friend likes the Casey Kasem song" (Have You Forgotten) and Mark said in response, "I think you're at the wrong show."

When Mark introduced "Natural Light" by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, he said the original artist was very talented and was in the room, but he didn't want to embarrass him by pointing him out.

Mark's version of "Carry Me Ohio" started off fingerpicked in a cool classical pattern but shortly switched to a strummed version. I actually didn't like the strummed version at all, though I suppose it was a nice break from the fingerpicking.

Someone asked Mark how the tour is going and he said it was the first show and that it was going well because he hadn't broken any of his fingernails yet. He then described how his fingernails always break from reaching for his passport or his hotel key or...from punching someone that kept following him around. Really couldn't tell if he was kidding!

That's about all I can remember. Really enjoyed seeing him in a non-general admission setting. In many ways, made it easier to really concentrate on listening to the songs, and also it was quieter during the songs - no talking at all. Would have liked to hear a few more non-AFP tunes (show seemed kind of short, probably about an hour and a half), but was certainly very pleased with what I did hear and was grateful that I was able to get a ticket after it was sold out! Would definitely purchase a live album from this tour!

Glad to see you made it to the show Pfloydman. And that you enjoyed it.

For me this was probably one of the weakest shows I've seen of his. Putting aside the forgetting a few lyrics and a few guitar fumbles, which I don't care that much about, I was disappointed at his continuing avoidance of his own back catalog. If you've released 6 full lengths in one band, then only three of original material as another, then play the nearly the entirety of the album that was only released to the public a few weeks ago and the scant few from other albums come mainly from the one released before I think it does a disservice to fans. I know it's a common and over argued point around here, but I think this time it finally got to me.

I think the nylon guitar sounds much better than the finger picking on the steel string, much cleaner and easier to hear the differences in the songs. Although he should not have strummed Carry me Ohio, or at least strummed with the pad of his thumb to avoid the continuous click that came through, I found that extremely distracting. And even though this isn't something he could have fixed very easily so I don't hold it against him, his guitar way out of tune during Duk Koo Kim which was quite distracting.

All in all I can say I enjoyed the show, but nowhere near as much as the many other shows of his I've seen. I think the guitar playing was fantastic and his voice sounded great. He even seemed a bit less grumpy on stage than I'm used to, which was refreshing and pleasant to see. Hopefully he gets a few of the kinks worked out as the tour progresses.

Re: 07/24/10 @ Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL (Mark solo)

Having seen mark a number of times before i'm happy enough for there to be a half dozen or so new songs included though cutting the length of the set from 2 hours, which most of the others have averaged,to an hour and a half means fewer oldies which is disappointing-we shall see on thursday in union chapel.

Re: 07/24/10 @ Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL (Mark solo)

Were they selling the new album on vinyl at the show?  Any other merch?

Re: 07/24/10 @ Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL (Mark solo)

No vinyl at all.  They did have most cd's and t-shirts for sale.

BTW, I thought the show was amazing.  I definitely enjoyed it more than last time I saw him with Phil touring for Tiny Cities.  The length of the show was kind of a bummer, but I get the impression that Mark uses the actual shows to "practice" songs that he puts in and out of the rotation.  He mentioned that he had been practicing the new songs "all week,"  so maybe the setlist will grow as the tour progresses.

Also, I wondered if maybe the new technique is a bit more physically draining on his hands and what not.

Re: 07/24/10 @ Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL (Mark solo)

The Chicago show was my first chance to see Mark Kozelek.  My daughter  bought me April for Christmas, I really enjoyed it!and have since picked up all of the Red House Painters, Kozelek, and Sun Kil Moon albums on vinyl.  For me, Mark's music is very entrancing, the intricate guitar pcking, his hypnotic voice which is unque in the same way as Neil Young, and introspective lyrics that are so open and revealing.

I was able to get tickets from a fan on Craigs List for my daughter and I, plus I was able to convince my brother to come, who found a ticket at the door from a kind fan.
I really enjoyed the concert! He seemed a bit nervous and tentative at points, which is completely understandable as this was the frist show of the tour and he even said that he was playing some songs for the first time live.  I really ejoyed Heron Blue.  I was also the person, who asked for Michigan, which I have enjoyed from Old Ramon and the live recordings.  As someone else posted, the venue was dead silent throughout, which made it easy to concentrate on the music.
I was hoping for a longer show and more songs from the older albums, but it was still very enjoyable.
One thing that no one relayed was that Mark mentioned that a Fan had followed him to his hotel and that he had to punch him.  Perhaps this had put him into a different mood?

Anyway, nice to find this page and get the setlist for the show!

Re: 07/24/10 @ Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL (Mark solo)

hi, this is my first post to this forum (though i've been a RHP/MK-SKM fan for several years). i, too, attended this show and thought it was great (it's MK, how can it not be?). this was my second MK show (1st was 930 listening room in Louisville, KY 6-21-08 and was amazing) and like the others, i was hoping for more older songs...but the ones he played were great, too.

as mentioned previously, there were a few flubs, and forgotten lines, as well as a few sour notes (vocally and musically) but i think everyone looked passed those and instantly forgave him (the people who usually see MK are typically long time fans who tend to be respectful to him...unlike the moron who thought he had to point out that MK said the same thing last time WHO CARES?!)

this was a very special show for me because this time i brought my two oldest kids ( 6 & 10 ) and they loved it! i'm always playing music in the house and they love when MK/SKM/RHP come on ( makes me very proud ).  but even more special is that after the show was over my friend from out of town mentioned to a guy who worked at the venue that my daughter (6) had a  thank-you note that she wanted to give to mark ( MK had sent this guy out to say he wasn't going to be coming out to sign).
so the guy takes the note to back to MK and about 5 mins later, as i am outside smoking, MK comes out and tells her thank you, answered some questions that she and my son had for him, and signed their ticket stubs. all of this was great, they loved it, they thought they were so cool because they'd finally met him!

as with the first time i met him he was very nice and grateful, but he seemed bothered (not by us, but in general, like he was flustered because of his mistakes or upset at the guy who shouted about the question he'd had asked two years in a row). i felt bad for him, he just seemed down
and like the previous time i met him - he asked to use my lighter (i should have just given it to him).

back to actual discussion: this was a great show and i'm sure as the tour progresses it will get even better. MK is certainly worth driving 5 hours each way (both shows) to see.  sorry for rambling

P.S. I NOW HAVE BOTH SHOWS UPLOADED THROUGH RAPIDSHARE (WAV FORMAT)...EMAIL ME FOR LINKS!!!!!!!!!!!
ALSO, ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE DOWNLOADED THE LOUISVILLE SHOW THROUGH A TORRENT SITE (uploaded by a friend 2 years ago) MIGHT WANT TO CONTACT ME...REMASTERED IT AND SOUNDS MUCH BETTER!

Were you sitting on the left side of the stage in the pews by the door on the main floor? I was sitting right behind a couple of guys with two young kids. You were talking about yo gabba gabba. I thought it was great seeing some young kids at the show, I want to become the dad that takes them to cool shows, like the residents which I heard mentioned.

Very cool that they got to meet him.

yes, that was us...my friend (same one who was at this show) and i took my son to see THE RESIDENTS in Feb at Logan Square...good ear, man! yeah, my daughter and i were watching YO GABBA GABBA couple years ago and she said that the guy singing sounded like Mark...she's got a pretty good ear, too.  My kids, wife, and I all have large and varying tastes in music...my son did enjoy The Residients show (to my surprise) though, he enjoyed Mark more.

yeah, we just got their ticket stubs framed and hung, they're still really excited everytime they walk by them!
