I'm not a MM fan at all, but I love Tiny Cities and would put it just behind Ghosts.
well, i choose "april" because it means something really special to me, about the time it came out, the general atmosphere surrounding it... and moreover this is by far my favourite SUN KIL MOON guitar sound, the folky one... thinking of "blue orchids" (might be the saddest koz tune ever...), "harper road" (so tender) or "lucky man" which are all beautifully written & recorded.
"moorestown"'s clean electric sound is pristine. "lost verses" & "tonight in bilbao" tell stories i find particularly well written & touching. "lost verses" acoustic live version on "lost verses live" is so emotional. last but not least, ben gibbard's & will oldham's discreet appearances add an original feature to kozelek's songwriting...
in the meantime, "gentle moon", "carry me ohio", "duk koo kim" belong to the best of, of course ! ;-)
"tiny cities"'s too short for being considered as a whole lp, might be stoopid but i still feel it's more like an ep, along "rock'n'roll singer" and "what's next to the moon". the first time i heard "exit does not exist" i felt really nostalgic, just a few harmonics disappearing like a shooting star. and then you have "ocean breathes salty" which has a very different sound than the other ones, as if it was from another recording session, which makes me consider "tiny cities" more like a collection of misc recordings than a proper studio album, you know ? anyway, just my opinion.
about "admiral fell promises", well, as i'm still listening to it a lot, it's only little by little becoming an album with distinct songs, a dynamic of its own. lyrically, so far i find it less interesting ("you are my sun" or "third and seneca" which reminds me too much of those lists of places like the one featuring in "tonight in bilbao" for example) except for a few tunes that kill everything !!! like "alesund" (i really enjoy when he describes himself with a songwriter perspective, with a distant & objective look)...
oh i forgot to mention that "i'll be there" is already among my absolute favourites, it's just pure & lovely. perfect union of lyrics & music.
okay !
yeah, tiny cities has some wonderful songs! i love the minimalism of "exit does not exist", and "tiny cities made of ashes" too. "truckers atlas" is awesome and "ocean breathes salty" is just a beautiful closer. and of course, "four finger fisherman" is pretty neat. the problem with "neverending math equation" is of course koz's voice. compare it to the live version from baltimore (ottobar) and you'll wonder if he was sleepwalking in the studio...
anyway, brock's lyrics are always amazing in my ears, and i think the fact that these are modest mouse songs turns the album away from being just a novelty - unlike most of the 'classic rock' stuff koz has covered in the years (although i know his love for that music is nothing but pure). not that his ac/dc stuff is bad, love some of it - but there are a few lines that are so bad it just makes you blush. (needless to say, that goes for the work of the neanderthals called kiss, too.)

Great post Sonograph, very insightful and well-written, thanks
'Ghosts' is my favourite, perhaps because it is the first album of MK's I had ever heard and I associate it with some really amazing memories. I think with MK the mood the listener is in, the things the album conjures in memory are very important and go hand-in-hand with appreciation of the album.
